Hivewild: From Residency to Sold-Out Performances
At Carroll Hall, we are deeply committed to supporting local artists, and aspire to be a palette for creative partnership. We host an annual artist-in-residency program for select artists throughout the year. The program supports emerging and established artists across disciplines for the development of new works or works in progress.
Welcoming Hivewild to Carroll Hall
Back in January 2024, Hivewild was accepted as a Carroll Hall Artist in Residence. Under the direction of Katherine Maxwell, the company spent February 2024 in a choreographic deep dive into Maxwell’s newest work, ‘with your sweet fragrance’, an immersive dance theater work that focuses on the question "how do we become tender with the Earth?".
On March 21st, Maxwell and Hivewild’s team of six dancers presented a 30 minute work-in-progress excerpt of the work, playing with the parallels between human relationships and human treatment of the Earth and its resources. After the conclusion of the residency, Hivewild spent the rest of the year in rehearsals, dramaturgical development, and public showings around NYC, before returning to Carroll Hall in the fall.
On November 13-14, Hivewild formally showed the completed first section of ‘with your sweet fragrance’, complete with an audience talkback curated by dramaturg Sam Morreale. Maxwell plans to complete and premiere the work in 2025, creating space for dance-lovers and climate activists alike to come together around a shared care and commitment to the Earth and its protection.
with your sweet fragrance: the wall is a preliminary look into the universe of with your sweet fragrance, focusing on human relationships and power dynamics. Set to premiere in 2025, the full iteration of with your sweet fragrance will facilitate a visceral and tender experience that leads to a deeper awareness of humanity’s role within the climate crisis and activation towards both individual and collective climate reparations.
